Tree roots anchor the tree in the soil, keeping it straight and stable, and absorb water from the soil. Tree roots also take nutrients and chemicals out of the soil and use them to produce what they need for the tree’s growth, development, and repair.

This article is about the artist Steve Tobin and his project called Steelroots. He casts different materials in bronze and steel directly from nature. One of his more famous pieces is a September 11th memorial of a bronzed cast of a sycamore tree that had been uprooted during the falling of the World Trade Towers. This article describes the contradiction between the natural element of the roots and the unnatural materials being used to create the artwork.
I relate to the subject of roots because roots are my subject right now for the semester. There is something about roots that I just find really interesting and appealing. I like the fact that for the most part they are stationary. I like how they can appear out of nowhere and go nowhere.
